The Passionate Collector - George Rae Fossils

An exhibition of fossils collected by George Rae and bequeathed to the Hunterian Museum

11th September - 20th December 2003

Eclectic collection

George collected a variety of ancient objects in addition to his fossils. Archaeological artefacts including prehistoric flints were found in his earlier collection.

As his collection grew, George became more concerned with conservation issues relating to geological sites. He was very upset when he found out that fossils from protected sites were being sold to dealers and other collectors. He became disillusioned with some collectors and nearly destroyed some of his research on a particular specimen that was sold. Thankfully, his research still exists and is being worked on by other scientists in the hope of eventually publishing his findings.
